After the political disruption of 9/11 it engaged in a diversification of its supply and less reliance on Saudi Arabia.

An oil dependence which accounts for the large deficit in goods and services and may justify the shift to local production through shale oil (or schist oil) which is a far more costly oil but could be profitable if oil prices are maintained at the high level they have reached for more than 5 years (except for the sharp and short decline of 2008)
